1. Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)

Cue our heroine, a young innocent Winona Ryder, and lurking in her shadow is the temptation of an illusive and provocative lover – Dracula. The story chronicles the dubious means through which an aged vampire attempts to earn the companionship of a Victorian, soon to be married, girl named Mina. As she slowly falls under his sphere of influence, Mina’s fiancé Jonathan attempts to stop the unholy union with the help of Dr Abraham Van Helsing. Though it’s a story many know through decades of adaptions, this edition strikes a romantic chord because of it’s eccentric and intriguing balance of bloodshed, romance and aesthetics. By the end of the film you and your Ohlala date will be envisioning each other in the agony and ecstasy of the protagonists clad in Eiko Ishioka’s tight and flowing blood-red costumes.

2. Interview with the Vampire (1994)

A story which is as much about the consequences of living for an eternity as a seductive killer, as it is about the hedonistic and adventure-seeking tendencies of our generation – it can be described as an adrenaline rush at the very least. The failed attempts of Tom Cruise turning a resentful and empathetic Brad Pitt into a fully fledged hunter add a thought-provoking element to the story. By the end of the film, you will be beckoned to ask your date the tempting question of ‘would you rather save, or savour the ones you admire, if you were a vampire?’

3. Nosferatu (1922)

There is nothing more ominous and terrifying than the sheer power of our imagination to drift along the story line of this dangerously silent film. Don’t be fooled by our generation’s take on these carnivorous monsters. Orlok, the lead vampire, is at no time sugar coated as being attractive or seductive. He is flat out villainous, killing for the taste of blood, not love. The only comfort in watching the film is the idea of relaxing in your Ohlala dates’ arms after moments of muscle clenching anticipation.

4. What We Do in the Shadows (2014)

Is that you MJ? No – check again it’s the undead decked out in the most fashionable garments of their time and showing and sharing it all on reality TV. This hilarious mockumentary follows a group of otherwise reclusive vampires through their trials in dealing with prejudice, fights, friendship and even romance. If you thought that being centuries old would make you the wiser, this film proves you wrong and in the end opens you up to laugh about your own silly past mistakes. Perhaps, the best way for setting the mood for comfort and conversation on your Ohlala date is laughter.

5. Queen of the Damned (2002)

Is there any combination sexier than vampire turned musician? Not according to paranormal researcher Jesse Reeves who decides to dig deeper into the lyrics and history of Lestat, the vampire undercover as a lead singer of a heavy metal band. The ensuing romance between the two wakes a force that sends worlds colliding when the very first vampire, Akasha is woken in anger. Though at times a little melodramatic, it is the typical film that makes an analogy of the inner good and bad in every person. With such a universal theme set in the alluring visuals of the vampire underground, there won’t be lack of this to flanter about once the film is done.
